LGB - a control - The modules' installation

Junction box and cable gland

The junction boxes

outside in the garden match the IP65 protection class ("weatherproof") and contain switch and track modules as well as other printed circuit boards, like f.i. sound modules.

Protection against all weathers is f.i. offered by placing the boxes inside model buildings. Is there no such possibility, the boxes for example can be hidden beneath a bunch of fieldstones. An ideal location to place a box in, should be near to the consumers which need to be connected and it should not be located in a depression where water tends to gather up.

A gland is used for the cables' inlet. This is filled with acrylic as an additional seal before tightening it. Future extensions are no problem since additional glands can be mounted easily.

The power and data lines' implementation in the form of a ring circuit requires that these cables are led into the box as well as out of the box. The cables for the consumers are connected to the modules' screw terminals and let out of the box through the above mentioned glands.
The modules residing in a box are "piggy-pack" mounted on threaded tree rods. These are both fixtures and electric conductors for the modules. Thus a connection to the 24V DC power supply is needed only once per box. The data line is "tapped" using T-shaped branchings with short ends. These ends are connected to the modules' related screw terminals.
Apart from the electr(on)ic components an opened little plastic bag can be found inside the boxes which contains approx. 100g of desiccant. This prevents potential trouble with the formation of condensate. The desiccant can be regenerated at 120°C in the stove, if necessary.

Filled junction box

After four years of trouble-free all-year operations any initial doubts regarding a continous weatherproofness of this installation are cleared out completely.
