An unexpected addition
found its way from Germany's farest northwest into the local garden: A SEG Mallet steamer. The model had been sitting in a display cabinet of a co-worker's relative (a former loco driver) eversince due to the lack of a layout and hence never had been used. Since the inheritors had no use for the model, my colleague asked me to give it a new home.
First thing was cleaning the beauty thoroughly and adding a starting delay so that the lights come up before the loco sets off. Moreover, the driver and the fireman were replaced with Preiser figures and the drive's moving parts got some fresh lubricant.
Best prerequisites for a first successful test run...
A closer look at the details at daylight shows a few minor flaws which can be rectified by replacing the worn parts.
Say goodbye to liquid gas and the cable drum
A cable drum and a soldering station or a gas soldering iron are no longer needed now outdoors - a 10Ah power bank and a programmable and adjustable soldering iron come as a wonderful and handy replacement. Outdoor soldering is possible even at low temperatures. Since these batteries don't like chilly environments, an improvisational insulation protects the device:
