Back to the future...

... after a trip into the past. The other day I stumbled across a pile of thousands of old photographies. When sorting out the pictures, I discovered the b/w photo shown below. It shows myself at the age of about six years playing with the Fleischmann H0 model train in a room in the basement of my parents' house.
A couple of years later I filed an application for building a garden railway. Unfortunately, my father rejected it for no reason (as I thought at that time). I now leave it as an excercise to the hobby psychologists to find out whether it was perseverance, determination or just defiance or simply nothing but real enthusiasm to finally set up a garden railway in my own garden.

The other picture (meanwhile in colour) shown on the right was taken approximately 42 years later...

What I've been planning on

for a long time was to add some suitable details to the RhB Velocar's interior. As I wasn't able to get hold of a drawing or prototype pictures which could have given some clues regarding this car's interior, I had to rely upon a vague testimony for adding the details.

Some Preiser bicycles which had not been built yet and a 2.5mm brass rod were found downstairs in the box of remainders...

Cut to length and soldered

Already varnished and mounted

The brass rod was cut to the car's internal length, adding 1mm. Then two braces were cut to length and soldered to the long rod. 3mm drills with a depth of 1mm were applied to the car's chassis and the walls in order to fit in the ends of the previously built stand. The solder connections were sanded and varnish was applied from a spray can. The bicycles were put together while the paint dried out and afterwards the stand was mounted using a small amount of methacrylate based glue. Fixing the bicycles was done with some plastic glue.

Happy new garden railway year 2009 !
